Leadership in a Replaceable World

I figured it’s time to start a blog & a podcast. After all, I’m about to be a published author. And I have my hands in so many ventures, from music to real estate, that maybe some out there actually want to hear from me.

The last year or so has been a journey for me. A tremendous, wonderful, fantastic, scary journey. It all started a little more than a year ago when I decided to disband my real estate team. After exploring a couple of ideas on how I could impact the world, I discovered that my heart was no longer in running a real estate team. I had to move on.

Don’t get me wrong, real estate is a great industry. It offers the ability to help people one on one during a pretty big moment in their lives. And it’s good money. But it is not why I’m on this earth. I wasn’t put here to open doors and write contracts. I was put here to make a different impact. And while I still sell homes, I’ve since limited the amount I sell in order to have the time and energy to make an impact in other ways.

I believe we are all on this earth to make a tremendous impact. I think I’m here to influence others to go after what makes them special and unique. To get others to be irreplaceable in a replaceable world. To be the voice that says, “Don’t buy into the ‘dream’ of the 9-5 for 50 years then you retire. Instead, buy into the dream that you have longing in your heart to come out!”

Think about it. Everywhere we look, we replace. Our cars get some mileage on them and we trade them in. We break something around the house, and instead of trying to fix it, most of us replace. And, who can blame anyone? I mean, our world is built around convenience. If you need something, you can order it and have it on your doorstep in less than 24 hours. Replacing is becoming second nature.

So much so, that I believe we are rapidly becoming replaceable in our jobs and careers. From employees job-hopping to employers severing company leaders for bottom line gains, there’s little loyalty out there in the business world. I’m replaceable in real estate. If something happened to me and a family member needed to sell their house, it wouldn’t take them long to find a quality agent to replace me with.

So many give so much of their time and energy where they’re replaceable. I did. For years, I tried to hire people, to help employees grow, and to find more homes to sell. I did all of this while I knew other things called in my heart. And I see it in the eyes of friends. Just the other day, I saw a real estate friend of mine post a selfie getting on a plane to go to a national conference. While the caption was jubilant, his eyes were filled with longing for more. This is all too common in our world today.

This is a symptom of being replaceable. When we spend too much time doing things that another could do, it crushes the essence of what makes us unique. Spending 40-60+ hours per week getting after your paycheck is only worth it if it’s what calls uniquely to your soul.

There’s that old saying that if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. But this must be real love. Not the love of a paycheck. Not the love of a boss who you really like. Not the love of the limelight. This must be irreplaceable love. The love you have in your heart for what makes you special. Working in that realm means never working a day in your life. But just enjoying your job isn’t the same. That enjoyment is fleeting if it’s not the right love.

Go after what you love! Go after the type of impact you can make on this world that only you can make. Anyone can open a door and write up a real estate contract. That’s not my unique impact. Instead, I must choose to go after the parts of life where I am irreplaceable.

If I don’t make my music, no one will.

If I don’t speak my words, no one will.

And if you don’t go after what’s in your heart, no one will.

And if no one does, we can’t make our world a better place.

Until next time – Rob 🤟

What an inspiring post! You’re totally right. It’s easy to just keep doing the things you’ve always done and before you know it, time just slips on by. I’m chasing my dream too… it’s exciting and terrifying ❤️
